Alvar Aalto Route

Alvar Aalto Route connects sites designed by Alvar Aalto’s architecture office into a fascinating cultural travel route across Europe. In addition to Finland, you can enjoy Aalto’s masterpieces in countries such as Italy, France, Germany, and Estonia. Alvar Aalto Route offers experiences in the world of architecture and design, proximity to nature, high-quality accommodation services, and local specialties.

Alvar Aalto Route was certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe in 2021. Certification means belonging to a network of highly regarded European cultural routes.

The Cultural Routes programme, launched by the Council of Europe in 1987, demonstrates in a visible way, by means of a journey through space and time, how the heritage of the different countries and cultures of Europe represent a shared cultural heritage. The Cultural Routes put into practice the fundamental values of Council of Europe: human rights, cultural democracy, cultural diversity and identity, dialogue, mutual exchange and enrichment across boundaries and centuries. As of 2023, there are 47 certified Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

Cultural Route on Aalto’s Architecture and Design Heritage Association

The Alvar Aalto Route is managed by the tourism route association.

Objectives of the Association:

  • To preserve Aalto’s cultural heritage.
  • To connect all sites designed by Aalto’s architecture office in Europe that are open to the public.
  • To promote sustainable cultural tourism to Aalto’s sites, in collaboration with the association’s members, by increasing their visibility and facilitating access to these sites in Finland and worldwide.
