Varkaus Sawmill
Explore AR DestinationAlvar Aalto and A. Ahlström had close collaboration in every town where the company had business. In Varkaus, the cooperation was especially distinctive in small house production at Varkaus House Factory, but existed also in individual buildings.
The most known and visible building in the cityscape was the Varkaus sawmill, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1945. The sawmill was built on the frame of an old, burnt sawmill. The high wood chip storage tower of the sawmill building had a typical light-coloured paneling. The sawmill was demolished in 1975, after a new sawmill was completed on the other side of Ahlströminkatu -street.
