From Reserve Officer School to Petkele

We will drive along road 170 to the Petkele residential area. On the way at the River Summanjoki is the pumping station of the former Summa Paper Mill. The pumping station was designed by Alvar Aalto.

The guide will board the bus at Rantahaka (Hotel Leikari).

We will drive along road 170 to the Petkele residential area. On the way at the River Summanjoki is the pumping station of the former Summa Paper Mill. The pumping station was designed by Alvar Aalto.

We will go on foot and get to know the surroundings of the Summa Paper Mill as well as the dwellings of the workers and foremen of the mill in the Petkele area, all designed by Alvar Aalto. (1.5 h)

Transfer by bus to Hamina, to the Reserve Officer School Museum.

Tour at the museum: The museum has a section that describes reserve officer training in Hamina before the Second World War, during Alvar’s era. The museum contains items such as a photograph of Alvar’s quarters, with the future master architect named. We will also hear how the insignia of the Reserve Officer School was created. At that time, Varvara Schantin sold buns to the boys of the Reserve Officer School while they were in training.

The museum houses special exhibition “Hamina – Suomen vanhin varuskunta” (Hamina – the oldest garrison in Finland) drawn up by Ilkka Kaskinen. It provides a concise presentation of the history of Hamina with its circular town plan and fortress. (45 min)

Transfer to Hotel Seurahuone.

Tove Jansson’s paintings in the Marski Cabinet of the hotel. There is also a brief description of the other artists who used to live in Hamina: Magnus Enckell, Hugo Simberg, Isak Wacklin. (30 min)

Meal or tea serving at Fortress Restaurant Kamu at Hamina Bastion. (1h 15 min)
