DESCRIPTION:Sunila Aalto Homes is an open house event that presents the former residential area of the Sunila pulp mill\, located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland and designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto. The event explores architecture\, interiors and design. Visit the pine-filled landscape of Sunila and enjoy the atmosphere of its homes. \nThe event will be held for the fourth time on the last weekend of August 2026. Visitors will have the opportunity to enter private homes in Sunila\, most of which have been permanently inhabited since 1937. \nAalto’s Sunila also includes summer cottages\, studios for artists and writers\, and apartments furnished with design classics\, available for year-round stays. \nSunila is an architecturally significant and cohesive area. It is included in the Finnish Heritage Agency’s 13-site World Heritage nomination\, “Aalto Works”. The decision will be announced this summer. \nThe white\, lime-washed apartment buildings and terraced houses of the Sunila factory community housing area are arranged in a fan-like formation that follows the curves of the terrain. Sunila is located by the sea\, near the Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park. DESCRIPTION:Sunila Kantola welcomes visitors to spend the summer in Alvar Aalto’s renowned industrial community. Throughout the season\, several exhibitions offer perspectives on Sunila’s history\, industrial heritage and contemporary art. \nThe main exhibition of summer 2026 is TAidetta ja TEhdasta\, a joint exhibition by Hannu Oksanen and Rurik Wasastjerna. Kantola also hosts Eric Polloc’s photography exhibition\, presenting the first decades of the Sunila pulp mill and the story of mill director Lauri Kanto. \nThe exhibitions are open during Kantola’s summer opening hours and will remain on display at least until the Aalto Homes weekend. \nDuring the summer\, visitors can also join guided public tours introducing Sunila’s architecture\, history and distinctive industrial community. Tours take place every Wednesday at 5.00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Maison Louis Carré presents Being There\, a photography exhibition featuring works by Finnish American photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen and French artist Gaspard Noël. Both artists work with their own bodies in nature\, exploring the place of the human being in the world. \nThe exhibition brings together two different approaches to photography\, the body and presence. The works are connected by a commitment to the moment of capture: each image is based on what the camera saw at the moment of exposure\, without AI\, Photoshop or multiple exposure. \nDesigned by Alvar Aalto\, Maison Louis Carré offers a distinctive setting for the exhibition. It is the only building designed by Aalto in France. Completed in 1959\, the house is located in Bazoches-sur-Guyonne\, around 40 kilometres southwest of Paris. \nThe exhibition is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm. DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the beautifully designed and elegantly furnished Kantola residence in Sunila\, the former official home of the pulp mill’s director\, designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto\, hosts an impressive four exhibitions under one roof. \nOne exhibition tells the story of Lauri Kanto\, the first director of the Sunila pulp mill and original resident of Kantola\, through a photo collection. In another\, local Sunila-based artists explore their homes and surroundings through art. On the ground floor\, visitors will find portrait works by footballer Atom Tanaka\, who has played for HJK\, Japan’s top league\, and now represents KTP in Kotka — and who has made Sunila his home. His works focus on portraits of Finnish dogs. \nThe exhibition lineup is completed by paintings by Takuyo Kawachi\, a Japanese-born artist now based in Helsinki\, who captures the moods and moments of his new homeland. \nAs in previous summers\, a small shop will also operate in Kantola\, offering items related to Aalto\, Sunila\, and the exhibitions.

Over the decades\, Artek’s in-house drawing office employed a wide range of interior architects\, textile designers and professionals in the applied arts. Their work is behind many well-known products\, yet as designers they have remained almost anonymous. This exhibition brings these skilled creators to the fore – individuals who helped shape Artek’s rise as a modern European design and interiors pioneer. \n\nThe drawing office functioned as a collective\, handling a wide variety of design tasks\, from furnishings for private and public spaces to the smallest domestic details. Its holistic approach included interiors\, textiles\, fairs\, exhibitions and visual graphics. By applying and varying Alvar Aalto’s structural innovations\, the team created a broad spectrum of versatile furniture for different settings – quiet yet thoughtful examples of Artek design. \nProduced by the Alvar Aalto Museum\, the exhibition reveals the designers behind the signatures and drawings\, highlighting the work and careers of several key figures.
