SUMMARY:Kantola Summer 2026: Exhibitions and Guided Tours
DESCRIPTION:Sunila Kantola welcomes visitors to spend the summer in Alvar Aalto’s renowned industrial community. Throughout the season\, several exhibitions offer perspectives on Sunila’s history\, industrial heritage and contemporary art. \nThe main exhibition of summer 2026 is TAidetta ja TEhdasta\, a joint exhibition by Hannu Oksanen and Rurik Wasastjerna. Kantola also hosts Eric Polloc’s photography exhibition\, presenting the first decades of the Sunila pulp mill and the story of mill director Lauri Kanto. \nThe exhibitions are open during Kantola’s summer opening hours and will remain on display at least until the Aalto Homes weekend. \nDuring the summer\, visitors can also join guided public tours introducing Sunila’s architecture\, history and distinctive industrial community. Tours take place every Wednesday at 5.00 pm. SUMMARY:Ekenäs Dialog: Life Dreams
DESCRIPTION:This August\, the garden of Villa Skeppet becomes a setting for literature\, conversation and reflection. Under the theme Life Dreams\, German\, Finnish and Finland Swedish authors come together in Ekenäs to discuss literature\, identity\, life choices and dreams: the ideas that guide us in life and in writing. \nThe festival offers the chance to hear some of today’s most widely read and respected authors in conversation. SUMMARY:Aalto Homes 2026: open house event in Sunila (Kotka\, Finland)
DESCRIPTION:Sunila Aalto Homes is an open house event that presents the former residential area of the Sunila pulp mill\, located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland and designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto. The event explores architecture\, interiors and design. Visit the pine-filled landscape of Sunila and enjoy the atmosphere of its homes. \nThe event will be held for the fourth time on the last weekend of August 2026. Visitors will have the opportunity to enter private homes in Sunila\, most of which have been permanently inhabited since 1937. \nAalto’s Sunila also includes summer cottages\, studios for artists and writers\, and apartments furnished with design classics\, available for year-round stays. \nSunila is an architecturally significant and cohesive area. It is included in the Finnish Heritage Agency’s 13-site World Heritage nomination\, “Aalto Works”. The decision will be announced this summer. \nThe white\, lime-washed apartment buildings and terraced houses of the Sunila factory community housing area are arranged in a fan-like formation that follows the curves of the terrain. Sunila is located by the sea\, near the Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park.
